This weekend our team of volunteers gathered in Arens de Lledo for a tree planting activity in collaboration with Life Terra! This NGO donated 112 trees to help them in their global mission to plant 500 million trees in Europe to act against the climate crisis! We planted fruit trees (apple and plum trees in particular) as well as other species that will serve as food for humans and birds and that will fix nitrogen and enrich the soil, but above all increase biodiversity!
We also learned how to use soil water retention techniques by making circles around the trees. We planted the trees in two different places: the food forest and at the edge of the vineyard in the bottom of the valley (project LifeTerra 85), which will allow us to observe which places are the most favourable for their growth, depending on the protection against wind and sun.
Following this activity, we labelled each tree using a digital device set up by Life Terra to record each species planted via a photo. We will see in the coming months how these trees grow.
If this activity proves successful we would like to go further and receive 1000 new ones from Life Terra to plant in the autumn!
We are all delighted with this weekend which took place in a friendly atmosphere and with the sharing of knowledge between volunteers, all under the sun of the Rovira Valley!
