🌿 A week at the youth exchange “ACTIVE PERMACULTURE” in Mas-Les-Vinyes! 🌿

🌿 A week at the youth exchange “ACTIVE PERMACULTURE” in Mas-Les-Vinyes! 🌿

In May the youth exchange "active permaculture" was held in Mas-Les-Vinyes

We are delighted with the youth exchange that happened last May in Mas-Les-Vinyes! 😍 This fantastic experience brought together young people from all over Europe to learn more about permaculture, to make wonderful presentations, but also to do practical work such as bio-construction and forest management!

Here is a video with some great moments of this week : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MaacKBx1Z8 !

Thanks to all the volunteers, the organisers, the sending associations and the European Solidarity Corps programme who made this incredible experience possible!

Walk along with me in the Boodaville’s terraces…

Walk along with me in the Boodaville’s terraces…

update on the Boodaville's terraces
“The young peach tree looks gorgeous! The artichokes are getting dryer and dryer, there are some promising buds, but the lack of water is in your face. If I remove some of their leaves, the plants will be able to distribute overall more resources and waste less water through evapotranspiration. The red valerian is about to flower! How can I use red valerian as a medicinal plant?

Is the nitrogen-fixing vetch producing seeds? I like Klif’s idea to gather the seeds from the alfa-alfa that grew in those spots that never received water from our water catchment systems. From a plant perspective, producing seeds in these harsh conditions means recording the lack of water by mixing its genetic code to increase the chances of survival of the next generation. In the future wet season, the seeds with the most adapted genetic code will flourish in drought conditions and they can be selected for future seed collection for further spread. We accelerate the process of adaptation of the plants to our rapidly changed climate. This strategy called seed landrace, is what we learned some time ago from Jack and Jacqueline’s amazing permaculture project.

Strawberries are doing well in the wicking beds! Are they going to re-flower? I hope they are one of those re-flowering cultivated varieties, although, if I were a strawberry plant now, I would produce seeds and go to sleep until the rainy season again. I wonder if a thicker layer of mulching can help. At Can Siló they had a food forest made of many doughnuts (cárcavas) large 2 meter in diameter with one 2-year-old fruit tree in its centre and all around the tree a thriving orchard that they did not need to water: manure and mulching for a total of about 30-40 centimetres in depth were the key to this success. We should implement it here too! But where to get such large quantities of manure and mulch?

Gallito is calling, did he use to sing more or am I getting more used to his singing?

I should go check out the thyme terrace, I wonder how the pear trees are doing, those sprouts from the bottom part of the trunk, and nothing growing on the top part, were a bit worrying. I’m glad Nick answered about this, and I cannot wait to go visiting him and Silke again: We are going to help them sculpturing the cob layer of their strawbale house next week! Anyways, Nick said to not remove the green sprouts that grow above the graft union, so our case in point now is to not intervene.

In permaculture, zone number 5 is the zone of no intervention: here, human energy should only be invested in observation and meditation to get inspired by and to learn from the master: Nature, its universe. Now, this closes the circle perfectly when you think that on the other end of the permaculture zones is zone 00: the personal and emotional dimension of the individual, its internal universe. We got to talk about the permaculture zones last weekend at the Can Siló permaculture gathering.

Yo honro este espacio en ti
Donde l’universo mora

There, we shared, chatted, and chanted. Magical people and place I am grateful to have met and lived in. I was positively struck by some inspirational eco-living tools and know-hows. The solar oven, tasty chips of sun-dried thin fruit slices, washing the dishes without washing; i.e. cleaning dishes with ashes: its effectiveness was impressive, washing the dishes with no water, how out of the box-thinking!

Sara”

About the experience at Can Siló :
“For me, the experience was quite intense: as a non-spanish speaker it meant spending hours of listening and never fully understanding what was being said. However, I was able to infer some things during the tour, since Ignacio and Juan were explaining the workings of their project very clearly.
Despite almost not being able to speak with the people around I did not feel neglected or not part of the group at all. There was downtime in which I was able to play some guitar, which was much appreciated, and almost everyone did try to have a short talk with me or ask me some questions. There was a general vibe of acceptance and they shared everything with me as much as with eachother.”

Taller de permacultura y de regeneración de suelos

Taller de permacultura y de regeneración de suelos

We did a permaculture workshop in Hort de la Font Trobata !

PERMACULTURE AND SOIL REGENERATION WORKSHOP

Last Sunday we had the pleasure of organising a workshop in the hort de la font trobata garden! Led by Anna, participants were able to discuss topics related to permaculture design, including making trenches in the soil for water retention and the benefits of biochar! There was time for discussion and exchange after Anna’s explanations, and everyone was able to contribute to the conversation in their own way!
After the workshop, a practical moment was proposed, and some participants were able to implement the techniques that had been explained just before.
The Boodaville association thanks all those who participated in the workshop and hopes to repeat the experience very soon!

UPDATE: Terra Verde – Solidarity Project in Galicia

Terra Verde III edición

UPDATE: Terra Verde – Solidarity Project in Galicia

TERRA VERDE 3rd Edition May 2023! This post is a summary of the results of the Terra Verde project - a group of young people in Galicia, Spain organised an "EcoFeria" and much more ..

We were delighted to receive a message from Irene this morning sharing information about the third edition of the Ecofair they started with the Boodaville coordinated solidarity project in 2021. If you are in Galicia go and enjoy this wonderful, growing, permaculture based event.

It’s so wonderful to have real examples of the impact of what we do.. complex dynamic systems are not that easy to measure!

We are a group of young people near Vigo in Galicia who are very aware of the eco-social crisis in which we find ourselves. We decided to create a collective and work to bring people closer to food sovereignty, to promote healthy and sustainable food and making an eco-sustainable living. We offered workshops, implemented ecological gardens, and most importantly organised a “Spring Eco-fair”. This project gave us the chance to develop social and business skills as well as being the beginning of the great project of our lives in and with the communities that surround us. Our project was aimed at people in exclusion or at risk of social exclusion, especially women and young people, while helping an empty and aged rural area to renew itself.

Activities we co-created:
  • Enero 2021 De-Eucalyptisation

We organised two collective workdays that were open to anyone who was interested, and attended by all of our team, to take on some forestry management. We removed young invasive Eucalyptus trees to allow more space for autochthonous species, and formed mounds of branches to slow water run-off and encourage soil development.

  • Febrero 2021

Construction of a greenhouse- the beginning of our vegetable garden

  • May 2021 – Spring Eco-Fair

This was our biggest (and most stressful) event. With just 6 of us working together, navigating COVID regulations and getting permissions from the town hall we managed to get hundreds of people together to share and learn. Our event was to encourage local circular economy, promote solidarity among the community and offer, completely free of charge, workshops in social and ecological topics. See the video to relive this wonderful day!

  • June 2021 onwards

We have been offering a range of free workshops form different members of the team, and plan to continue these beyond the summer!

For more information about our recent activities please follow us on Facebook

Salida Etnobotánica por Montjuic

SORTIDA_ETONOBOTANICA_POBLESEC_2022-07-02_14-05-57

We planted a 112 trees with Life Terra!

We planted a 112 trees with Life Terra!

Tree planting activity in our permaculture farm - volunteering in February 2023 in Boodaville

This weekend our team of volunteers gathered in Arens de Lledo for a tree planting activity in collaboration with Life Terra! This NGO donated 112 trees to help them in their global mission to plant 500 million trees in Europe to act against the climate crisis! We planted fruit trees (apple and plum trees in particular) as well as other species that will serve as food for humans and birds and that will fix nitrogen and enrich the soil, but above all increase biodiversity!

We also learned how to use soil water retention techniques by making circles around the trees. We planted the trees in two different places: the food forest and at the edge of the vineyard in the bottom of the valley (project LifeTerra 85), which will allow us to observe which places are the most favourable for their growth, depending on the protection against wind and sun.

Following this activity, we labelled each tree using a digital device set up by Life Terra to record each species planted via a photo. We will see in the coming months how these trees grow.

If this activity proves successful we would like to go further and receive 1000 new ones from Life Terra to plant in the autumn!

We are all delighted with this weekend which took place in a friendly atmosphere and with the sharing of knowledge between volunteers, all under the sun of the Rovira Valley!

Our experiences in Boodaville Caseres 2022! – Eli and Aurore

Our experiences in Boodaville Caseres 2022! – Eli and Aurore

This post is about Elisa and Aurore's experiences volunteering in our permaculture project in Spain

THE FOUR SEASONS IN BOODAVILLE

Boodaville has a wonderful landscape, surrounded by the pine trees of the Valrovira forest. A place of silence, a sanctuary of tranquillity which makes it easy to get closer and to listen to yourself and to the phases of nature. I have chosen to spend almost a year here and I have been able to observe the change of nature around me in the four seasons. The colours of the leaves, the smell of the air, the texture of the earth, the songs of the birds and the bitter taste of freshly harvested olives. Everything continues at a slow and relentless pace. I thank all the people who have participated in this life-changing experience of mine: Anna and her family, all the 2022 volunteers, all the people who helped or just stopped by to visit and perhaps enjoy the starry sky.

Thank you!

Elisa”

From September to December in Boodaville

I am Aurore, I am 22 years old and I am from France. I lived in Boodaville for 3,5 months. It was a great experience of life.

I came to Caseres the 1st of September. It was still the summer, and I participated in the wine harvest. We also harvested the field of grapes next to Boodaville. Thanks to the bike I discovered many places around Boodaville. Thanks to the tracks network I went to Pyñeres, Batea, Arens de lledó, Arnes, els Ports, Horta de San Juan, Calaceite, and other places of nature. With Elisa’s car we also visited some places. Even if these tracks seem abandoned or isolated you can find many beauty, and some art. The Algars river between Caseres and Boodaville is also a great place to take a bath. You can stay there and chill without seeing anyone. Here you can experience calm and relaxation.

In Boodaville I’ve been introduced to the world of permaculture. Laura, our tutor, gave us some “classes” and we practiced too. I learned about the concept of food forest, and about “micro raices”. Living in a place that takes care of plants and seeing everything growing up is very satisfying.

One of our tasks was to observe the place, to take time to live there on this land, to watch plants, trees etc. At the beginning I didn’t really understand why it was that important, but next I understand that in permaculture you have to know extremely well your land like a friend or like a pet that you have to tame. Watching is everything, everyday, threw every season. It allows you to know how to manage the water, where you have to put your plants etc.

In the fall of September we planted a garden for the winter, it has a shape of a spiral with sun rays. I like that part of design in permaculture, there is a big dimension of art. There is also in permaculture a dimension of philosophy. It’s probably about that part that I learn more in Boodaville.

I learn to respect the land and the earth, respect humans, and Humanity, and be generous with both. I learned about sharing what you have, everything, ideas like meals. It was really great to live with Laura, Elisa, Fran y Eric. I learned a lot from each one and I enjoy sharing many things with them.

Thanks to Boodaville I discovered permaculture and an alternative world with people who share  these values. I visited some other permaculture projects who open their doors and share their knowledge. I went to a Finca in Tenerife but also to 2 other projects in Catalunya. The goal is always autonomy.

Living in nature with savage fruits and plants, inspired me to cook them. I began to think a lot about what is edible in nature. I harvested a lot of blackberries, figs, apples, almonds and many other things to make some cakes, some jam, or to eat raw. I made some apples dry in the sun that you can see in the photo.

During the first two months I didn’t see the rain. Everything was so dry and warm. At least at the beginning of November the rain came, and it was like a big event. It shut off the light and the wifi. It was a Friday night and a Saturday. Sunday when we went outside the river had overflowed. We went to a high point and the view was very impressive. But for the garden and the land in general the rain was very welcomed, it was just the moment when the tank of water in Boodaville turned empty.

The 1st of December the cold began and I abandoned my flip- flops to put on sneakers. In a few days I am going to get back to France and to leave this peaceful place where you are free to explore your desires led by the philosophy of permaculture. Boodaville could be viewed a little bit like self-directed learning in nature.

Aurore”
